Syncro Soft announces the release of Oxygen XML Web Author version 28, the web-based solution for editing and reviewing XML content in any modern web browser.
This major release focuses on delivering AI-assisted authoring, DITA-centric workflows, and enhanced enterprise integration capabilities in the Oxygen XML Web Author. It adds deeper integration with Oxygen AI Positron 8.0, streamlines editing and review tasks, and strengthens security for large organizations.
What’s New in Oxygen XML Web Author 28
Enhanced AI Capabilities with Oxygen AI Positron 8.0
• Multi-provider AI integration: The default OpenAI model is upgraded to GPT‑4.1 and new connectors for Google Gemini, Google Vertex AI, AWS Bedrock, and xAI Grok. A flexible Custom Connector add-on helps integrate any REST-based AI service using OAuth Client Credentials and custom query parameters.
• DITA-aware agentic workflows: The new Agent, DITA Agent, and Ask chat modes allow the AI to perform powerful operations, giving access to tools that the AI can call to get additional information needed to complete its task. You can convert documents or topics to specialized DITA types (Task, Concept, Reference, Troubleshooting, Glossary) and restructure content by automatically choosing the right type per section. Validation fixes are applied automatically after AI generates or replaces content, keeping it compliant with DITA standards.
• Context-rich AI workflows: Drag and drop Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), PDF, and images directly into the AI chat, or reference attachments. The text and images in DOCX files are preserved in their original order so the AI can better understand structure. Chats persist as you switch between edited documents, and a more compact conversation view with Smart Scroll lets you pause auto-scrolling when you review previous messages. Favorites for commonly used prompts, plus a drop-down search and “/” shortcuts, make your interaction with the AI more efficient.
• Transparency and governance: A new Context chip shows you the main information additionally passed to the AI (selection, document, map, and project). Tool-call details can be inspected, copied, and included when exporting chats for collaboration or troubleshooting. Prompts can invoke AI actions directly (e.g., “correct grammar on the current document and save”), and the new edit_document tool allows small, precise changes (such as attribute or spelling fixes) as part of an AI-assisted workflow.
Editing and Reviewing Productivity
• Enhanced tables: Resize columns simply by dragging separators and toggle full-width rendering for wide tables with a single click.
• Simplified commenting: Quickly add comments from the floating toolbar that appears when you select content, so you can give feedback without breaking your writing flow.
• Markdown interoperability: Copy selections from the visual editor as Markdown, with structure and formatting (headings, lists, tables, code blocks, emphasis) preserved.
• Improved rich media support: DITA 2.0 video and audio elements are now previewed inline in the visual editor so you can review embedded media directly where you edit.
• Enhanced new file creation: Search predefined templates when creating new files. Optionally use AI to generate new file content from a prompt and optionally attach XML, Markdown, images, PDF, Word, or PowerPoint to guide the generated result.
• Precision search: Use the Find/Replace side view to search specifically in attribute values, in content, or both, making it easier to locate and update structured information.
• Whitespace visibility: Enable whitespace markers in the editor to clearly see and manage spaces and tabs, particularly in code blocks or mixed-content sections.
Authentication, Security, and Integrations
• Azure DevOps Connector: Quickly connect with Azure DevOps for Git-based projects.
• OpenID Connect (OIDC): Application-level OIDC authentication adds a layer of sign-in security for controlled access.
Customization, Performance, and Extensibility
• Display modes and references: Options for persisting tags display mode and collapsing referenced content by default help speed up DITA map loading and editing DITA documents with many references.
• Change-tracking behavior for tables: Administrators can configure how deleting table columns behaves when change tracking is enabled, choosing whether such deletions are allowed or blocked.
• AI extensibility: Actions are auto-loaded from an "ai-positron-actions" folder with flexible ways to filter out actions or reference external prompts. Custom AI actions are prioritized ahead of built-ins, and all default actions benefit from full localization in supported UI languages.
Component updates
• Updated server platform (Apache Tomcat 9.0.111) provides the latest security fixes and improved stability.
• Upgraded front-end foundation (migrated from Preact to React 17.0.2) for a more robust and modern user interface.
