Microsoft's Smart Tag Software Development Kit (SDK) is a tool to help developers take advantage of Office XP support of XML as a file format in Excel and Access. Smart Tags let XP users execute pre-built behaviors to take advantage of new functionality, such as extracting data from Office XP documents and moving it to other XML-enabled applications, without requiring any additional coding or scripting.

The SDK contains an Application Programming Interface (API) for the ISmartTagAction and ISmartTagRecognizer interfaces, instructions for using Smart Tag List XML files to build Smart Tags without coding, instructions for embedding Smart Tags in web pages, a programmer's guide, a tutorial, a registry key reference and sample code in Microsoft Visual Basic and Microsoft Visual C++.
