Natural Language Semantics Markup Language for the Speech Interface Framework

Working Draft

Date: Nov. 20, 2000
Link: http://www.w3.org/TR/nl-spec/
Source Author or Organization: W3C

The Natural Language Semantics Markup Language (NLSML) Working Draft is a one of the set of specifications for voice browsers that comprise the W3C's Speech Interface Framework (part of its ongoing effort to develop specifications that will enable access to the Web using spoken interaction).

An "utterance" is defined as "meaningful user input in any modality supported by the platform". The Natural Language Semantics Markup Language (NLSML) Working Draft provides details about how NLSML can be used to describe the meanings of individual natural language utterances. NLSML's element set was designed to accurately represent the input generated by and for natural language interpreters responding to a user's utterance.

Natural Language semantics representation uses the XForms data model, and will also support and interoperate with SGML (Speech Grammar Markup Language) and SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language).
