This document describes Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML), an XML based language used to create chat robots such as Artificial Linguistic Computer Entity (ALICE), an award-winning open source natural language artificial intelligence chat robot.

AIML is an example of using the XML standard to define a specialized language for artificial intelligence. The intent was for AIML to be the simplest way to create an AI chat robot, with syntax approachable by anyone with HTML experience. The choice of XML syntax also allows integration with existing tools such as XML editors.
