SemanText is a prototype application developed to demonstrate how the ISO Topic Map standard (ISO/IEC 13250) can be used to represent semantic networks.

The application builds a knowledge base, in the form of a semantic network, from a topic map. New information can be added to the knowledge base and topic map automatically based upon user-defined rules used to infer new knowledge. New knowledge is then interchangeable with any other topic map enabled system.

SemanText is written in Python for platform independence, and intends to become a complete topic map development, management and browsing tool as well as a knowledge management system.

Planned features include: the ability to merge topic maps, an enhanced ability to create and modify topic maps, and the ability to build topic maps from XML documents and other sources.

The program is open source, distributed under the GNU Public License (GPL).
