LiveDTD is a perl program that parses Document Type Definition (DTD) files and generates a copy with HTML markup inserted. The result is the same text as the original DTD, but with live links that navigate through the DTD. Both elements and parameter entities become links.

The program is intended for maintaining a complex DTD, customizing a public DTD such as DocBook or TEI, or exploration of a particular DTD. The author finds it especially helpful for DTDs like DocBook and TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) that use hundreds of elements and parameter entities.

LiveDTD can also be used in combination with a text editor to make a DTD authoring or editing tool. The program is free, subject to a copyright in the program text.

Several examples of converted DTDs, including the XML Specification DTD, are posted at http://www.sagehill.net/livedtd/demonstration.html.
