Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) devices are currently unable to perform transformations because they are typically "dumb" devices with limited processing power; transformations must be performed on the server side.

In this tutorial, the author shows how to make use of the Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) technology and the Microsoft Document Object Model (DOM) to do the transformation. An XSLT (XSL Transformations) style sheet is used to transform XML to Wireless Markup Language (WML) for output on mobile devices, using MSXML3 as the eXstensible Style Language Transformations (XSLT) processor.

A Microsoft-based server and WAP emulator are required to run the examples (the author uses Microsoft IIS 4.0 and UP.Simulator by Phone.com).
