The Open Healthcare Group is in the process of creating systems capable of interoperating with traditional SQL database systems to create a fully native XML system for clinical use.

XEditor, an XML vocabulary which specifies an editing list for an XML document, is being developed as a technique to edit XML files as if they were SQL tables. An XEditor document can be compiled using an eXtensible Style Language Transformations (XSLT) transformation into an XSLT which carries out the specified editing list.
