MusiXML is an XML application for music notation developed to provide a standards-based method for publishing musical scores via the Web. MusiXML's elements and entities describe notes, rests, dots, bars, beams, staffs, etc., with minimum repetition in storage and a separation of content and structure.

The MusiXML page provides links to the MusiXML Document Type Definition (DTD), an example using the DTD, the MusiXML Schema (tested with the XML Schema parser in Oracle's XML Developer's Kit, recommended by the author for visualization while working with MusiXML), an example using the schema and a list of other Web-based music notation markup languages and formats.
