This document specifies the requirements of the W3C's XML Query Language Working Group and includes some usage scenarios to help explain those goals.

The goals of the XML Query Language Working Group are: to define a an infoset-based query data model, to define a set of query operators to use on that model that are capable of operating on either single documents "fixed collections" of documents, to provide the capability of selecting whole documents or subtrees of documents that match a set of defined conditions on document content and structure and to provide the capability to construct new documents based on such conditionally-selected content.
