The Past, Present and Future of Web Services, part 2 is the second installment of the Web Services Papers, a detailed history and analysis of Web Services by Fourthought, Inc. cofounder Uche Ogbuji.

Part 2 begins with a look at the consolidation and convergence of the present period. An examination is made of the impatience of "the big players" (large companies) and other Web Services developers with the perceived slow pace of the W3C, the increasing involvement of Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) and the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I), and the turf battles and controversies involved. Ogbuji then moves on to explain the details of a Web Services stack and the progress made so far in the areas of security, business process management and component models. Next, several key relationships are scrutinized, including the consanguinity between Web Services and Open Source software, Semantic Web activity, Object Management Group's Model Driven Architecture (OMG MDA), and other emerging technologies ranging from Java Naming and Directory Interface (JINI) and Project Juxtapose (JXTA) to a range of distributed smart devices.

Part 2 wraps up by reviewing some lessons gleaned from this history, goes on to predict the likely future of Web Services and discuss the factors and choices that should lead to future successes in the Web Services field.
