This chapter, excerpted from the book Flash 5 Dynamic Content Studio, published by Friends of Ed, covers using the Web Distributed Data Exchange (WDDX) Flash extension to transfer XML data between Flash front ends and server-side languages such as PHP or ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML).

The chapter presents an overview of the WDDX ActionScript file and wddxRecordset object and then provides two usage tutorials: querying a database using ColdFusion and WDDX, and creating an address book with WDDX that has a Flash form front end and passes queries to and from a database via a ColdFusion template. Access to a server running either ColdFusion Server or the free ColdFusion Express Server is required for the tutorials.
