XML Schema: Formal Description provides a formal description of XML instance types and validating instances against schemas.

The goals of this specification document include a formal, declarative definition of schema validation, specification of names for all XML Schema components so they can be uniquely identified by Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) and provision of a semantic framework for software implementing XML Schema.
