The Cascading Style Sheets Level 3 (CSS3) specification is modularized in order to enable building of specific tests on a per module basis, offer easier support decisions for implementors and allow update of individual modules as needed. This specification provides developers with the syntax, grammar and other requirements for each of the particular CSS module(s).

Modules covered in this introduction include: selectors, color space issues, Ruby (Ruby contains proposals for new style properties supporting typographic traditions such as vertical Japanese and Arabic), paged media, user interface, Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL), Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), Aural Cascading Style Sheets (ACSS), columns, Behavioral Extensions to CSS (BECSS), and Math.
