Enhydra

Version: 2.2
Company: Lutris Technologies

Overview

Enhydra is a 100% Java application server with industry-leading XML support. Enhydra was released to the Open Source community on January 15, 1999. Since that time, Enhydra has become the dominant Open Source application server and www.enhydra.org, has been visited by over 80,000 users resulting in more than 11,000 downloads. Hundreds of independent developers are actively contributing to Enhydra. Web projects leveraging Enhydra are underway worldwide by IT departments, Internet consultants, and start-up companies.

Enhydra supports Unix, Linux, Windows and NT, as well as industry-dominant Web servers including Apache, Netscape Enterprise Server and Microsoft IIS. The only platform requirement is the presence of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.1.6 or higher.

Our mission is to promote the acceptance, usage, and continued development of Enhydra, a powerful Open Source Java/XML application server. We believe that through the efforts of the hundreds and soon thousands of developers world wide that have free access to Enhydra source code, it will evolve to become a product superior to any closed source software in both features and reliability. We also believe that corporate customers will benefit from Open Source Enhydra, not only because license cost to deploy is free, but because it allows for much quicker bug resolution, rapid feature enhancements, simple partial deploy, and no financial barriers to upgrading to most recent versions. Finally, due to the mass and worldwide aspect of the community, 24 x 7 help is easy to get.

Through the efforts of the Enhydra community, it is our intent to continue to evolve Enhydra so that it remains competitive with commercial application servers in the closed source world. Many partnerships to enhance Enhydra in this manner have already been undertaken so add functionality such as Enterprise Java Beans (EJB), CORBA support, and allow Enhydra to conform to Sun’s J2EE specification.

Whether you are a MIS professional, developer, user, provide Enhydra services or add-on products, or are interested in contributing to the development effort of Enhydra, we hope that you find what you need on this site.

Who We Are…

Enhydra.org is an infrastructure dedicated to supporting the efforts of the Enhydra community. The Enhydra community consists of numerous entities including community sponsors, technology providers, users, and of course developers.

The Enhydra.org website is sponsored by Lutris Technologies. Lutris is also the core technology provider for Enhydra. Lutris aims to broaden the knowledge of and participation in Enhydra.org and welcomes all interested parties. For more on Lutris Technologies and Lutris' statement regarding the motivation to initiate Enhydra.org, please visit the Lutris Web site.

A number of key Enhydra technologies are being contributed by technology partners to the project, such as BullSoft with their JOnAS EJB server, France Telecom's Jonathan ORB and RMI, and Plugged In Software’s Platypus Toolset. Please visit our Partners area for more information and other contributors. Users are the people who use the products of the Enhydra project. While those in this role aren't contributing code, they are using the products, reporting bugs, making feature requests, helping make the current Enhydra releases even better and helping us prioritize what needs to go into future releases.

Finally, of course we can never forget the hundreds of other developers (commonly called "contributors" in open source terminology) throughout the world that contribute to the ongoing success of Enhydra. Developers are the people who write code, documentation, patches or contribute positively to the project in other ways. A developer's contribution is always recognized in the source code base. The developers are ultimately the people that have made Enhydra what it is today, and will continue to drive it forward in the future, proving once again that Open Source development models can truly produce world-class, closed-source beating products!
