I do not see the necessity of a W3C work around XPath 2.0 For me, we have only two languages in this scope: XPath 1.0 and new XQuery 1,0 (December WD) In my point of view the mix of XPath2.0/XQuery1.0 is not useful to the understanding and creation of clear standards. Perhaps the work around XPath 2.0 is correct, but the name "XPath 2.0" for it could be modified for something as "common source of XQuery/XSLT". Has nobody ideas in this direction? P.S. I bag your pardom in my poor english.
