BEEP actually cleans things up significantly and is worth taking a closer look at. It doesn't go anywhere near HTTP, and security (TLS) isn't a layer, but an option that you can switch in. SOAP is just the format of the payload you send. I'm pretty fond of BEEP, but I fear that it's the misfit kid on the block, lacking the designer clothing of its more-promoted rivals.
