the number of times RELAX NG is proposed as an alternative on the XMLSchema-dev mailing list, which admits of XSD's limitations for many real-world cases. If RELAX NG can address data binding to the degree XML Schema has, it's going to be a real horserace. I can't see it as a bad thing to promote competition between these two standards; both technical efforts will be better off for it, regardless of which ultimately predominates. The strength of the political backing behind XSD seems ever less sufficient to ensure XSD's long-term viability.
