Response to: A web service that needs XML input

It's not hard to imagine a simple standardized routine to serialize the XML input data into a unique string, if indeed there is not already a standard out there...

Right, you can "stringify" anything. The same could be said of any XML document, but we find our reasons for using XML.

More to the point of this example, if the boolean logic were allowed to be arbitrarily complex, then the string representation would at least become cumbersome. Also, consider the costs of packing and unpacking that string, and compare to the costs of XML generation and parsing. The "non-XML" solution starts to look a lot like a reinvention of the XML solution. We can call it a "simple" string, but are we really saving time and trouble by staying away from XML?

As already mentioned, the next question is SOAP vs. posted XML, and I agree that's a separate issue.

Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
