That old XML was thoroughly documented and is still alive and well. I worked for a company that payed for access to it and we got full documentation of the parameters and the XML that would be returned. You can see the search engine (still using that XML API) on every page of http://www.iol.ie/ If you stick an &output=xml on the end of a regular google search, you will see an error message. If you doing this from an authorised IP address you will get XML instead of HTML.
