What about BEEP protocol, does this not address all of the fundamental underlying issues discussed here at the layer where they really should be addressed?

I was wondering this myself. It seems like BEEP has solved these problems, except maybe the NAT/PAT/firewall traversal problem.

Microsoft supports using a channel based on TCP/IP directly rather than HTTP for developing stuff that does not travel across the internet. I don't know if this is any better.
