But it begs the question: given the relative proximity of RDF/SPARQL to the relational model, why are the Semantic Web standards not closer both syntactically and semantically to it? This is, for me, the major reason which prevents its adoption. The number of people who understand the relational model and SQL at least informally vastly outnumbers those who understand RDF/OWL - and with good reason. Why not expend effort creating a useful, flexible SQL/XML syntax, with perhaps looser constraints in some respects and greater constraints in others? This would have made the Semantic Web infinitely more practical than inventing not one, but a host of new syntaxes.
