This article was written in 2001 and it is horribly out of date. Most of the techniques here are elsewhere referred to as 'shredding' XML into a relational model. DB2 and probably the other good SQL systems now have XML datatypes for columns, support XPATH to get elements or branches of elements, and support SQL to actually access rows within the XML document. An actual comparison of these features would be helpful in the rewritten article. 'shredding' is an obsolete, low performance, labor intensive practice that should now be deprecated.
