Simon, you refer to the contents of the shapefile DBF file has 'metadata'. Actually the DBF file contains attribute data. Each row in the the DBF corresponds to a feature in the SHP file.


Metadata refers to data 'about' the shapefile, for example, its projection, intended use of the data, when and how it was collected; things like that.


If it exists you'd find it in the file with the XML extension.
