It's not really fair to lump SVG in with Java and Flash as requiring a the user to install a plugin, though that may be the case for most users at the moment. SVG is also an open standard and it's only a matter of time before it's "standards supported widely across different browsers and platforms". Opera and Firefox 1.5 Beta (at least, I'm not sure about other browsers) already have native support for SVG.
