Thanks Bob. See the thread about xmlstarlet, which seems to be the simplest option I have seen so far for using libxslt.
I have been to the Xalan-C++ download page before, but it's not clear to me if there are compiled versions available for Windows, and it seems to depend on Xerces-C++. It all sounded too hard to try to put in the sidebar of an article so I did not follow that up.
