If you want to use XSLT without using Java or .NET, check out Xalan C++ and libxslt, which both have binaries available for Windows and Linux. (Judging by your use of libxslt's xsltproc, it looks like you've already discovered the latter on Linux.)
Those interested in "hacking" the XML from Impress, OO's competition to PowerPoint, might be interested in this XML.com article: http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2004/02/04/tr-xml.html

Thanks Bob. See the thread about xmlstarlet, which seems to be the simplest option I have seen so far for using libxslt.
I have been to the Xalan-C++ download page before, but it's not clear to me if there are compiled versions available for Windows, and it seems to depend on Xerces-C++. It all sounded too hard to try to put in the sidebar of an article so I did not follow that up.
