the http://tidy.sourceforge.net executable can also transform html word to xml, with the '--word-2000 --output-xml' parameter. Note also than a java version of tidy exist: http://jtidy.sourceforge.net/

  Yes, that's true. I have used Tidy before and it is very useful for getting HTML into XML.

  
  But Tidy doesn't allow you to round-trip the document back to Word or get the orginal style names from the CSS stylesheet so that you can relate them to the original style names in the Word document.
