Subject: vlibxml2 joins lxml
Date: 2004-11-26 09:38:01
From: Martijn Faassen

Note that I (Martijn, lxml instigator) had been in touch with Victor about vlibxml2 since before he did the release, and that after some talking, we decided to join our efforts. vlibxml2 is now a subpackage and foundational layer of lxml, one of the *other* libxml2 wrappers.

lxml will now offer both low level wrapping (but with memory management) in the form of vlibxml2 and higher level (elementtree API and DOM so far) support layered on some of this layer.

lxml is still not in the business of coming up
with *new* XML APIs -- vlibxml2 mimics the libxml2 API (but with memory management), etree mimics ElementTree and dom tries to be W3C DOM compliant (or at least a proper subset of it).

lxml aim remains to expose the power of libxml2/libxslt in more Pythonic ways.
