 WSDL 2: Just Say No
Subject: WSDL WG appreciates comments
Date: 2004-11-18 11:22:28
From: JonathanMarsh

Dear Rich,

The WSDL WG read your xml.com article with great interest. We're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the WSDL 2.0 Last Call documents. We are however glad to see very specific criticisms of parts of our documents, precisely what we hoped to solicit with our Last Call publication. As as result of such comments we make modifications or clarifications, or at least we try to explain better why the spec is the way it is. We are also hopeful that we may have already partially addressed some of your issues in the process of resolving similar or related comments.

As I'm sure you know, the best way to bring your criticisms before the W3C Director is to direct them first to the Working Group. We have a public comments list at public-ws-desc-comments@w3.org for this purpose. Any issues you file there that we don't address to your satisfaction are automatically brought to Tim for further discussion and resolution. The Working Group already is interested in adding some of the issues you raise to our issues list, but it would be helpful if you yourself sent mail to our comments list so there is a clear responsibility on the group to document your satisfaction with our resolutions (or dissatisfaction in the worst case). Also, you imply there are many other issues you'd like to see addressed, and we'd like to hear more about those too.

Thanks for taking the time to read our spec carefully, and for your article raising the visibility of the WSDL 2.0 specs. I'm sure it will motivate more people to read the specs carefully and critically, and to post their own comments on the specifications to public-ws-desc-comments@w3.org to the end of improving the end result.

- Jonathan Marsh
WSDL WG Chair

Jonathan Marsh's comment is almost too painful to read. I parse it thus:

"Thanks for your artice, if any of your points were already covered we might consider them, otherwise you should send your comments to the right address".

This is the kind of brush off help lines give to known loonies. If Jonathan cared about Rich's comments he would have addressed them.

I suppose we should just despair.

I didn't see it that way. As I read the note, Jonathan was both explaining how the system works (for newcomers), and saying that even though it's late, we're always looking for feedback.
