Why would XAML be an attack on SVG? If you have developed WIMP interfaces using SVG, as I have done previously, you may have felt that it can seem the overheads outweigh the benefits.
I have been in love with SVG since I bumped into it in an article on XML.com in mid 2000 and I'd use it to build interactive illustrations, info graphics and original, attractive or novel user interfaces but I wouldn't want to build conventional desktop applications with it.
XAML will go head-to-head with Flash where Macromedia are pushing Flash into the desktop application arena and XAML will tread on the toes of some SVG applications like Corel's Smart Graphics and the like.
Horses for course I'd say. XAML, XUL, Eclipse and Flash for the desktop app's market, SVG and Flash for illustration, info graphics and the novelty/games markets.
I think SVG is done a great disservice by placing in the desktop application arena because that is not it's strong suite.
