I love open source and open standards. But you highlight the problem yourself. XUL has been around and working for years, and not significantly changed the world of web application development. XAML, by being part of the development platform most enterprise programmers are likely to use, probably will.

    I could say the same about something like XML-RPC. It was open-source and it didn't have the backing of the big IDEs (and MS, etc.) but it did serve to lay some of the ground work for SOAP, wouldn't you say? I'm suggesting that XAML is 'just' MS waking up to the work done by the OS community with XUL and yes, they'll make it available 'to the masses' because they'll bundled into their IDE and because they have the 'market clout' to make it persuasive. However, I still contend that it was the work of the OS [XUL] community (and Netscape/AOL) that laid the groundwork ...
