At the risk of repeating myself, there are real business problems out there that require data to be sent down small pipes where bandwidth is at a premium. People used to say "oh, just upgrade the pipes", but that isn't a business reality - you just give yourself a huge distributed problem to solve. A standard compressed/binary transmission format for XML won't solve all of these problems, but it will solve a lot of them in a single, centralised, standard way. The biggest risk is that without the compressed/binary solution, a large community might end up creating a binary solution that *isn't* XML, and that would just cause headaches for everybody. One format to bind them all would really be the best thing, but plain-text-only just can't cut it in the imperfect real world. Cheers, Tony. |
