Excellent article, some very handy points. Just as an additional note to these; if the schema in question is defining a metadata schema, then using RDF (in XML) as an alternative is higly recommended. RDF allows the creator of the schema to easily bypass or handle many of these XML versioning issues - including re-using/mixing elements from other namespaces, refining/sub-classing previously defined elements, etc.
