There is a great need for persons who understand how to work with SVG to use it to support the production of tactile graphics for blind and visually impaired persons. There's plenty of hardware; software and software interfaces are the problem. A good place to start if you want to help is your local public school or other educational institution. One need is annotation. Another is a hierarchical approach where the author specifies what detail can be safely omitted to avoid clutter.
