You might want to take a look at the Arbortext Epic SGML/XML editor, formerly known as Adept. It comes with a powerful scripting language called ACL (looks very perl-ish to me) that allows you to customize its behavior, but you can also call Windows DLL's and throw some java stuff at it. You can also change the GUI (basic modifications are possible with ACL, more advanced things require a special GUI tool in Epic 4, but Epic 5 will probably use XUL) http://www.arbortext.com/html/epic_editor_overview.html
