I suggest taking a look at www.xopus.com. Xopus is a validating xml editor aimed at non techinal users.
It is completely standard based and offers a very interesting solution to avoid any "Tag soup", giving, at the same time, a very rich set of features for developers to work on for integration with various back-end CMS and/or customization.
Architecturally, it is client side xml talking to server side xml via javaScript. Currently, it uses MSXML, so it is an IE only solution, but there was some test implementation for a Mozilla content-editable version too.
It started as an open source project, but, unfortunaltely, now only a commercial version is available from Q42, the small Dutch company that started the whole thing.
