Taking the Pulse of XML Editing
Subject: Topologi

I guess Topologi wasn't there - not surprising since they're based in Australia - but I'd strongly recommend taking a look at it, if only for a contrast with the other editors.

It certainly leaves users in the "tag soup" - it's designed to make working directly with markup easier, not hide the markup - so it's probably a threat to national security. At the same time, though, it makes working with markup far more pleasant than it is in a typical text-editor, letting you focus more on the markup and less on the mechanics of creating it.

Working with markup is a skill, and I don't think it's that hard a skill to acquire, given training. There are a lot of jobs in XML-based systems that benefit substantially to direct access to the markup. I find it far easier to edit documents and prototype new formats that way, for instance. On the other hand, no one seems inclined to pay for training budgets that go beyond "this is almost like Microsoft Word" these days...
