Yes, you can use schemas without understanding all of the details, but most of the high level things (which he throws out) aren't really that difficult to understand. This article is like telling people not to worry about the gear shift--if they rev the engine enough, they can start in 4th gear and they won't have to shift. It's your job to understand the technology your using--you should do an excellent job, not just an adequate job.
