SGML has been available for decades as an open standard for the storage of documents. SGML offers much better support for the storage of content and markup than either XML or HTML. If there was a real demand within the business community for an office suite that uses a fully interchangeable storage format we'd have seen something emerge by this time, and SGML suites simply haven't penetrated the business market. The truth of the matter is that most businesses aren't too concerned that their office suite applications use a proprietary document format.
